DO NOT REPAY EVIL WITH EVIL

“Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult, but with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing.” – 1 Peter 3:9

In 1533, Thomas Cranmer became the Archbishop of Canterbury. He served in that position during the reigns of Kings Henry VIII and Edward VI. He is credited with writing and compiling the first two Books of Common Prayer which established the basic structure of Anglican liturgy for centuries and influenced the English language through its phrases and quotations. He reached out to other Protestants and sought their unity on the Lord's Supper. His greatest achievement was to get English Bibles into the churches for the first time. In 1556, Queen Mary, a Roman Catholic queen, sentenced him to be burned at the stake for his heresy against the Roman Catholic Church. Though Thomas Cranmer took a stand for Christ that some did not like, it was hard not to like him as a person. Cranmer was a forgiving man, and he was so careful to return good for evil that it became a common saying, "Do my Lord of Canterbury an ill turn, and you may be sure to have him your friend."

How do you react when you are wronged? Do you seek revenge or do you seek to do good? Today in prayer, thank Christ that He sought to do good when He has been wronged and follow Him in doing what is right.

“The blessed person is not him who simply declines the evil, but he who does what is good.” – Symeon the New Theologian

God’s Word: “Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everybody.” – Romans 12:17

LEARNING AND TRUTH

Always learning but never able to acknowledge the truth. ~ 2 Timothy 3:7

Albert Einstein is generally regarded as the greatest scientist of the 20th century. He was the author of the general theory of relativity and made important contributions to the special theory of relativity, quantum mechanics, statistical mechanics, and cosmology. His theories changed how science currently views time, space, energy, and gravity. Einstein was so advanced in his thinking that his studies and work set the standards for the control of scientific energy and space explorations currently being studied in the field of astrophysics. He was awarded the 1921 Nobel Prize for Physics for his explanation of the photoelectric effect in 1905 and "for his services to Theoretical Physics." Time Magazine named him the most important individual of the twentieth century.

For all his intelligence and knowledge, Einstein never seriously looked at the person of Jesus Christ and accepted him as his Savior. From a letter written in English, dated March 24, 1954, just thirteen months before his death, Einstein wrote, "It was, of course, a lie what you read about my religious convictions, a lie which is being systematically repeated. I do not believe in a personal God and I have never denied this but have expressed it clearly. If something is in me which can be called religious then it is the unbounded admiration for the structure of the world so far as our science can reveal it."

Knowledge is wonderful, but personally knowing Christ is by far the best thing we can ever do. Today in prayer, Modern mankind can go anywhere, do everything and be completely curious about the universe. But only a rare person now and then is curious enough to want to know God. ~ A.W. Tozer

God's Word: "This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth. For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all men--the testimony given in its proper time." ~1 Timothy 2:3-6

Running Away from the Father

RUNNING AWAY FROM THE FATHER
by Max Lucado

When I was seven years old, I ran away from home. I'd had enough of my father's rules and decided I could make it on my own, thank you very much. With my clothes in a paper bag, I stormed out the back gate and marched down the alley. Like the prodigal son, I decided I needed no father. Unlike the prodigal son, I didn't go far. I got to the end of the alley and remembered I was hungry, so I went back home. But though the rebellion was brief, it was rebellion nonetheless. And had you stopped me on that prodigal path between the fences and asked me who my father was, I just might have told you how I felt. I just might have said, "I don't need a father. I'm too big for the rules of my family. It's just me, myself and my paper bag."I don't remember saying that to anyone, but I remember thinking it. And I also remember rather sheepishly stepping in the back door and taking my seat at the supper table across from the very father I had, only moments before, disowned. Did he know of my insurrection? I suspect he did. Did he know of my denial? Dads usually do. Was I still his son? Apparently so. (No one else was sitting in my place.) Had you gone to my father after you had spoken to me and asked, "Mr. Lucado, your son says he has no need of a father. Do you still consider him your son?" What would my dad have said? I don't have to guess at his answer. He called himself my father even when I didn't call myself his son. His commitment to me was greater than my commitment to him. I didn't hear the rooster crow like Peter did. I didn't feel the fish belch like Jonah did. I didn't get a robe and a ring and sandals like the prodigal did. But I learned from my father on earth what those three learned from their Father in heaven. Our God is no fair-weather Father. He's not into this love-'em-and-leave-'em-stuff. I can count on him to be in my corner no matter how I perform. You can, too.

FORGIVEN AND ADOPTED

I tell you the truth, all the sins and blasphemies of men will be forgiven them. Mark 3:28

The novelist, A. J. Cronin, tells a story from his own experience as a doctor that catches the wonder of the gift of grace. Cronin was a friend of the Adams family who lived in the Connecticut suburbs. At the close of the Second World War, Mr. and Mrs. Adams decided to open their home to a little refugee boy from Italy with the outlandish name of Paul Piotrostanalsi. The Adams had two daughters and a six-year old son named Sammy. Sammy and Paul became inseparable friends, but little Paul was a difficult child, and often disobeyed Mr. and Mrs. Adams.

One day, little Paul went swimming in some contaminated water. He became very ill with a high fever, and the doctor suggested he sleep in an attic bedroom. But little Sammy missed his friend Paul so much that one night he crept up the attic stairs and into bed with Paul. Paul's contagious breath fell on Sammy's neck all night. In the morning, Sammy, never a strong child, became deathly ill. Paul recovered his health, but Sammy died within three days. It was a terrible tragedy for the Adams family.

A year later Dr. Cronin decided to pay a call on the Adams family. But as he pulled into their driveway, he was amazed and then angry as he saw Paul, the refugee boy, working in the garden with Mr. Adams. He got out of his car and angrily approached Mr. Adams. "What's this Paul Pio........whatever his name is, doing here after what he did to your family?" Mr. Adams looked at the doctor and then said quietly, "Dr. Cronin, you won't have any more trouble with Paul's name. You see, he's Paul Adams now. We've adopted him."

God has more than forgiven us, He as adopted us. Today in prayer, thank the Lord that His forgiveness is greater than any sin in our life. There is more grace in God's heart than there is sin in your past. - Erwin Lutzer

God's Word: Some men brought to him a paralytic, lying on a mat. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, Take heart, son; yoursins are forgiven. Matthew 9:2

DEPENDING ON FAITH

He said to her, "Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be freed from your suffering." Mark 5:34

Hurricane Katrina slammed into the Gulf Coast on August 28, 2005. One of the casualties of that storm was White Dove Fellowship International Outreach Center in Harvey, Louisiana. Harvey is located some 4 feet above sea level and there was heavy damage to the entire city. Reverend Michael Mille pastors White Dove Fellowship. Services were suspended at their facility for three weeks until September 18. He then preached to 300 people during the first service after the hurricane. His church normally had over 3,000 in attendance. During an emotional sermon, Reverend Mille offered a unique, Christian perspective on the tragedy and how it had affected his congregation, saying: "We have successfully planted people all over the U.S." He also noted, "We used to sing Jesus is all we need and now he's all we've got."

Are you at the end of your strength? Then turn to Jesus and trust in His strength. Today in prayer, stop trusting in you and place your faith where it never fails, in Jesus Christ.

Have you ever been in a situation that seemed so hopeless, so impossible, that you felt that even God Himself, might not be able to handle it? At this moment, there are marriages that are in serious trouble, relationships are damaged, businesses about to go bankrupt, finances going south and a plethora of other seemingly impossible situations that discourage us enough to want to quit. But giving up has never been and never will be God's answer to any impossible situation. As a matter of fact, it's only when things turn impossible that God does His best work.

Michael Mille

God's Word: Jesus turned and saw her. "Take heart, daughter," he said, "your faith has healed you." And the woman was healed from that moment.
Matthew 9:22

FISHERS OF MEN

Come, follow me, Jesus said, and I will make you fishers of men. Mark 1:17

On a Sunday in July 2001, Jens Oveson, age 60, was fishing for salmon in central Norway's Gaula River. The river is about 220 miles north of the capital, Oslo. Suddenly, he was swept away by a strong current. Kjell Wilhelmsen, 55, spotted the man's struggle. Wilhelmsen was a veteran fisherman who had fished the river for 25 years and knew where the current would carry Ovesen. Wilhelmsen ran across a bridge, waiting for Ovesen as the current carried him downriver. Wilhelmsen later told a newspaper, "He seemed paralyzed. Only his face and the tips of his boots were above water. I decided to start casting." His homemade lure hooked Ovesen's rubber waders on the first cast of about ten yards. But Oveson weighed 246 pounds. Wilhelmsen used every fishing trick he knew to reel in the big man without breaking his light fishing line. He landed the half-conscious Jens and hauled him onto the shore. Oveson survived the ordeal. ``I can thank Kjell for my life,'' Jens told reporters Newsmen tried to interview jell Wilhelmsen soon after the incident, but he had gone fishing.

Nothing is more precious in God's sight than the souls of men and women. That's why He laid down His life. Today in prayer, ask the Lord how you can be more effective at bringing people to Jesus and then act on that insight that He gives.

There is no joy in all the world like the joy of bringing one soul to Christ.

--William Barclay

God's Word: For he and all his companions were astonished at the catch of fish they had taken, and so were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, Simon's partners. Then Jesus said to Simon, Don't be afraid; from now on you will catch men. Luke 5:9-10
